BBC slash Alan Shearer’s pay as big earners’ salaries revealed

Shearer #Shearer

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer’s wages have been cut by the BBC.

The Newcastle United legend was paid around £50,000 less last year as the organisation’s gender pay gap was narrowed.

Several top BBC stars threatened to quit last year after it emerged male stars were paid more than their female counterparts.

However several women have now had bumper pay increases, including Zoe Ball – who bagged almost £1m more last year.

And despite Big Al’s pay cut, the 50-year-old still earned between £390,000 and £394,999 for his role on the show.

That was almost twice as much as his co-presenter, and former NUFC teammate Jermaine Jenas, who earned between £200,000 and £204,999.

However, Shearer’s pay cut means he’s been leapfrogged as the North East’s top paid on-air BBC talent – by a Sunderland star.

Desert Island Discs host Lauren Laverne surpassed the former striker by earning between £395,000 and 399,000 last year.

The figures have all be made public by the taxpayer-funded organisation as part of the BBC annual report.

And it reveals that both Shearer and Laverne are among the BBC’s top ten highest paid stars.

That list features four women – including Fiona Bruce and Vanessa Feltz – who all received more money last year following that criticism.

However, the highest paid TV talent is another Match of the Day star – and a man – host Gary Lineker.

His salary – which is between £1,750,000 and 1,754,999 – remained the same.

Another football host, Toon fan and NUFC Foundation patron Gabby Logan, earned between £185,000 and £189,999.
