Paddy McGuinness stunned Fiona Bruce as he revealed on BBC Question Time that his dad took out his own teeth with pliers.
The comedian made the revelation as the show in Nottingham discussed NHS dentistry and whether it is “time to invest in a pair of pliers”.
Asked for his thoughts on the question by Bruce, McGuinness said: “Funnily enough my dad did that.”
A surprised Bruce replied: “What.”
McGuinness went on: “He took his own teeth out because he couldn’t get a dentist appointment. This is a few years back, so I know that firsthand.”
The show discussed the issue following reports of people resorting to DIY treatment after being unable to get an NHS dentist appointment.
It comes as the Government this week unveiled its £200 million NHS dentistry plan.
Under the package, dentists will be offered cash to accept new patients and given £20,000 “golden hellos” to work in under-served communities.
Mobile dental teams will also be deployed to schools in under-served areas to give 165,000 children preventative fluoride varnish treatments to strengthen their teeth and prevent decay.
But leading dentists warned it will not be enough to help people struggling to access dental care.
Earlier this week, hundreds of people queued outside a dental practice in Bristol after it opened its books for NHS patients.
