AUSTIN, Texas – Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and his wife, Emily, are in a legal dispute with six Texas investment firms – including some where Mayfield’s family members are employed – regarding an unaccounted $12 million the couple invested, according to reports.
The Mayfields filed a petition in Texas last week to request the financial records of the six firms – Camwood Capital Management Group, Camwood Ventures, Texas Contract Manufacturing Group, Unitech, Apex Machining, and Lor-Van – between 2018 and 2023. Camwood Capital Management Group and Camwood Ventures were both founded by Baker’s father, James Mayfield, according to Yahoo! Sports. All of the witness contacts listed for the defendants in the petition are members of Mayfield’s immediate family, per WXAN in Texas.
The petition, which was filed in the Travis County District Court in Austin, Texas, seeks to determine what happened to $12 million in funds the Mayfields invested with those companies after they were “denied access to this information,” according to the filing.
“Petitioners simply do not know if their money has been properly and competently invested, has been stolen or otherwise misappropriated, or something in between,” the filing stated.
“It is too early to know whether a suit is likely or even anticipated. At this time, Petitioners have been deprived the information and documents needed to analyze whether their assets have been misappropriated.”
Baker, 28, signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the Browns after being drafted first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The former Oklahoma Sooners standout has earned $48.4 million throughout his five NFL seasons, according to Spotrac. Most recently, the former Heisman Trophy winner signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March.
