An independent investigative team spent hours Sunday scouring the scene of a shooting involving the deputy.

According to court papers, in the early morning hours of March 5, King County Deputy Clayton Stultz attempted to contact Medina-Parra at a Chevron gas station at 1554 NE 145th Street. Stultz said he informed Medina-Parra that he had a warrant for a suspended license.

Prosecutors said that Medina-Parra then stated that he was “gonna go.”  Stultz told investigators that Medina-Parra started to walk, then run away from a gas station. As Stultz ran after Medina-Parra, prosecutors said Medina-Parra pulled a gun from his pocket and started firing shots toward the deputy.

An eyewitness told investigators that Medina-Parra shot at Stultz approximately 12 times.  According to court papers, Stultz returned fire and during the firefight, both he and Medina-Parra were wounded in their arms.

Stultz then requested backup help from other law enforcement officers. Following the shooting, Medina-Parra was found hiding in a nearby shed where he was arrested without any further incident.

Both Stultz and Medina-Parra were treated at Harborview Medical Center and eventually released.

“Given that the defendant was willing to go to this length to avoid being arrested for his warrant, it begs the question what he is willing to do to avoid prosecution of crimes like the type he now faces,” prosecutors wrote.

According to prosecutors, Medina-Parra will be making his first court appearance on March 20.
