The first images for Netflix’s live-action TV remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender have arrived. Avatar: The Last Airbender was announced in September 2018, adapting the 2005 animated series of the same name. This will be the second live-action adaptation of the show, follow M. Night Shyamalan’s film The Last Airbender in 2010.
Now, Netflix has released a teaser and the first images for the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series at TUDUM, revealing the first look at Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko.
The elements of water, earth, fire, and air are shown, mirroring the order they’re introduced in the intro of the animated series. The trailer, as seen above, also reveals a release window of 2024, promising Avatar: The Last Airbender will arrive next year.

Avatar: The Last Airbender will consist of eight, hour-long episodes retelling the story of the series from the beginning. While it’s unclear how much of the original will be adapted, Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 will likely correspond with “Book One: Water” from the animated show. This is because Avatar: The Last Airbender cast Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue, a character that doesn’t appear until the end of Book One.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is being developed for Netflix by Sleepy Hollow and Nikita producer Albert Kim. The main cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender will consist of Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh. In addition, Daniel Dae Kim will portray Fire Lord Ozai, Ken Leung will play Commander Zhao, and Elizabeth Yu will take on the role of Princess Azula. With many key characters expected to appear, Avatar: The Last Airbender is shaping up to be a faithful adaptation of the original show.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has the opportunity to redeem the series in live-action, given the negative reception to Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. With a new creative team behind this live-action version of the series, Avatar: The Last Airbender may be able to please fans more than the film adaptation could. How much better an adaption the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender is will be clear once the series is released next year.
