Australian nationalist Pauline Hanson storms out of Aboriginal ceremony

Australia’s right-wing nationalist leader stormed out of parliament today, infuriated by an Aboriginal welcoming ceremony and moves to fly the Aboriginal flag.

Pauline Hanson, head of the populist One Nation party, yelled at fellow senators as she left the chamber during a “welcome to country” ceremony in which MPs were invited to acknowledge the traditional Aboriginal custodians of the nation’s capital and pay respects to their ancestors.

Hanson called out from her seat in the senate chamber, saying: “No, I won’t and I never will”, before leaving.

Other senators attacked her outburst as “ignorant and racist”. Lidia Thorpe, a Green senator from the Aboriginal community, said such racism needed to be addressed to make parliament safer.
