A nationwide telecommunications outage occurred on Thursday morning affecting more than 80,000 mobile subscribers as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile users have been unable to make calls, send text messages or access the internet without Wi-Fi.

Beginning Thursday around 4:30 a.m., mobile users began experiencing devices switched into “SOS mode” which also prohibits all normal, business and non-emergency calls being sent or received.

According to downdetector.com, a website tracking mobile service functionality, AT&T mobile service outages were being reported around 3:43 a.m., beginning with more than 2,500 customers affected. By 8:45 a.m., there were more than 73,000 users without service.

“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. We are working urgently to restore service to them,” AT&T said in a statement to USA TODAY on Thursday morning. “We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored.”

Verizon mobile subscribers have seen a peak of 4,219 users affected, while T-Mobile has noticed nearly 2,016 mobile subscribers affected around 8 a.m. on Thursday.

According to reports, AT&T mobility is the largest mobile phone service provider in America, with more than 245 million subscribers as of late 2023. Verizon has nearly 145 million subscribers and T-Mobile has 119 million subscribers.

Phone outages are expected to alter business and personal calls, but will also interfere with emergency and first responder calls on each network.

Users are encouraged to use a landline or other means of communication until the issues are solved.
