Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker used his morning routine Tuesday to pay homage to a fallen member of the music community ahead of Game 3 of the World Series.
Takeoff, a 28-year-old rapper and member of the group Migos, was shot and killed at a bowling alley in downtown Houston early Tuesday morning. Baker said during his pregame press conference he added Migos to his daily playlist in honor of Takeoff. Baker added he previously attended a Migos concert in recent years alongside his son, Darren, a minor leaguer in the Washington Nationals system. “I didn’t know who I was seeing,” Baker said. “And at the time I told my son and took a video. He showed his friends that his dad didn’t really know who he was around.”
Baker has no shortage of friends in the music and entertainment world. He said before Game 1 of the World Series he received a call from Snoop Dogg wishing him good luck, and on Tuesday, he name-checked another rapper popular in his morning routine. “From reggae music to Tupac, something like that, to get me ready,” Baker said Tuesday. “I use that now to get me ready or to calm me down or to get me angry or whatever I need.”
Perhaps the well wishes from Snoop Dogg will help fuel Baker to his first ever World Series title as a manager. Baker won the World Series as a player with the Los Angeles Dodgets in 1981, but he has not won as a manager despite 12 postseason appearances.
The Astros will look to take a 2–1 lead on the Phillies in the 2022 Fall Classic on Tuesday night. Follow along for live coverage of Game 3 here.
