Moonbin, one of the members of K-pop group Astro, has died. According to new police reports from South Korea, the singer-dancer was found dead at their residence in Gangnam. The star was just 25 years old. In an updated statement, Fantagio has said it is looking into reports of Moonbin’s death and has not released any official confirmation.
According to the police report via Yonhap News KR (via Naver), it “appears” that Moonbin did take his own life. However, no official autopsy has been done yet. “We are currently discussing the possibility of an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death,” unnamed authorities shared in their statement to Yonhap News.
The police went on to say that Moonbin was found at home by his manager who went on to call the police. The star was found deceased on April 19th at 8:10 pm local time.
For those unfamiliar with Moonbin, the star who was born Moon Bin, debuted as a member of ASTRO under Fantagio in February 2016. The group’s debut track “Hide & Seek” was a quick hit with fans both in South Korea as well as internationally. Moonbin has been a key member of ASTRO since his debut as a dancer and singer. Since their debut, Moonbin’s family has also entered the K-pop industry as their younger sister Moon Sui is part of the girl group Billlie.
Most recently, Moonbin has been busy working on a sub-unit project within ASTRO featuring bandmate Sanha. Last December, Fantagio confirmed Moonbin had chosen to extend his contract with the company along with the rest of ASTRO except Rocky. In the near future, the band’s sub-unit was meant to perform a show together in Jakarta; However, earlier today, an update was released announcing the event’s cancellation.
This death marks a dark day for K-pop fans as Moonbin was known by the community as a joyful spirit. Sadly, his passing marks another loss in the thriving industry. In the past, the deaths of Jonghyun of Shinee rocked headlines across the globe, and other stars like Sulli and Goo Hara were lost too soon. At this time, Fantagio has not released a comment on Moonbin’s passing. The members of ASTRO have not released any official statements either.
