Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne posted an unexpected response to the news that he had been left out of France’s World Cup squad.

The left-back fought back from an ankle injury and returned to fitness in time to start and score a free-kick against Manchester United last weekend, prior to Didier Deschamps naming his 25-man squad. Digne would have hoped to be called up for the fourth tournament of his international career after picking up 46 caps for Les Bleus.

However, Deschamps opted to rely on Theo Hernandez and the versatile Lucas Hernandez as his left-back options, with the Villa man left out alongside teammate Boubacar Kamara. The defender will have been gutted to miss out on a place at Qatar but his family had a slightly different reaction, as shown by his social media.

On his Instagram story, the 29-year-old reposted a video from his wife that showed his young children celebrating the news that he would be remaining at home. His son and daughter were seen dancing around, singing “daddy he stays with us”, while his wife added that the family would be off on holiday.

Despite his disappointment, Digne can at least take solace in his family’s reaction. The left-back also has several team-mates that are going through the same experience, with Tyrone Mings, Douglas Luiz and Emiliano Buendia among those not to be picked by their respective countries.

While the World Cup is ongoing, Villa will be jetting off to Dubai for a training camp after manager Unai Emery takes charge of a Villa XI for the Peter Whittingham Memorial Match in Cardiff on November 30. The manager has already stressed the importance of the unique break in the league season, which will allow the Spanish coach to get to grips with his new players.

“The break will help us,” Emery said in his first interview as manager. “After 10 days we are going to be off, we are going to start again, we will have training days to improve and create identity and our style.”

Should Digne have been named in the France squad? Let us know in the comments section…
