ASTON VILLA striker Wesley was sent off after headbutting Stoke ace Nick Powell in a pre-season friendly.

And the big number nine did not stop there, as he grabbed his opponent by the throat before team-mates broke up the pair.

Remarkably, Wesley was on the pitch for just seven minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.

He reacted angrily to a challenge from Powell, and forced his head into the midfielder when getting back to his feet.

Wesley was clearly very upset and proceeded to grab Powell’s neck, provoking intervention from his team-mate Tommy Smith.

Powell then reacted with a slap of his own but avoided punishment from the referee, who only sent off Wesley.

And Wesley’s outburst negatively affected his side, with Villa losing 2-0 at the bet365 Stadium.

The Brazilian may not have helped his chances of starting at the beginning of the season, particularly as injury limited him to just three league games in the last campaign.

Ollie Watkins became a mainstay for Dean Smith’s side after signing from Brentford last year, and he scored 14 goals in his debut Premier League season.

Wesley could face an uphill battle to win back a regular place in the side, therefore, with the Villans also chasing forward Leon Bailey.

Smith also has Keinan Davis available but recent reports have linked him with a loan move to Stoke.
