Ashley Young has moaned he is ‘not sure how you are supposed to defend anymore’ after the Aston Villa captain was penalised for an unintentional handball in the 4-0 defeat against Newcastle United.

Villa had frustrated Newcastle up until that crucial moment with how the visitors broke up a stop-start game. Ten minutes of stoppage time were ultimately added on at the end of the first half after Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia both required lengthy treatment

However, it was in stoppage time that referee Paul Tierney rightly awarded the hosts a penalty after Miguel Almiron’s goalbound effort struck the arm of Young inside the area as the Villa skipper slid in. Callum Wilson stepped up from the spot to put Newcastle 1-0 up just before the break.

Eddie Howe’s side went on to put Villa to the sword in the second half with Wilson, Joelinton and Almiron all scoring in the space of 11 breathless minutes. In truth, Villa could have ended up losing the game by a far bigger margin after Wilson and substitute Jacob Murphy both went on to hit the woodwork late on. Young, though, was still rueing Tierney’s first-half penalty decision after the game.

“I’m not sure how you’re supposed to defend anymore,” he told BBC Sport. “The referee said that’s the rule but unless you’re putting your arms by your side, it’s not the right way to defend so you’ve got to defend in the way I did.”
