Texas junior Lucas Gordon was back at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday, and he brought a new pitch with him.
Texas held its first practice of the 2023 baseball season on Friday afternoon and Gordon, Texas head coach David Pierce and outfielder Dylan Campbell also met with local reporters. Part of Gordon’s media session included a discussion about the slider that the left-handed pitcher has added to an arsenal that already included a fastball and change-up.
Gordon said that working on a slider was his “main priority” during an offseason that saw him partake in summertime workouts in Charlotte, N.C., alongside Aaron Nixon, the former UT pitcher who transferred to Mississippi State in July. After throwing that slider during team scrimmages this fall, Gordon expressed confidence in the new pitch.
“Now if he’s adding that (slider) in there, I mean, good luck to other hitters facing him because he’s gonna be really good this year for us,” Campbell said. “He’s gonna be the heart and soul of that pitching staff.”
During a breakout sophomore season, Gordon went 7-2 with a 3.05 ERA. He was voted onto the Big 12’s all-preseason team earlier this month.
On Feb. 17, Texas will travel to Arlington’s Globe Life Field and open its season against No. 8 Arkansas. The Longhorns will also meet Missouri and No. 10 Vanderbilt at the 2023 College Baseball Showdown that weekend.
