Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has reportedly held talks over a move to Ligue 1 giants PSG but he is likely to remain with the Gunners.

Arteta’s reputation has gone through the roof after he masterminded Arsenal’s sustained challenge for the Premier League title in 2022/23.

The Gunners declined during the run-in but they still enjoyed a superb season as they sealed a return to the Champions League.

The Spaniard is now regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe and it is hardly surprising that he is being linked with a move away from Arsenal.

Earlier this month, it was reported that PSG have sacked Christophe Galtier after just one year in charge of the French champions.

A report from RMC Sport claims PSG have still not ‘found an agreement’ with a head coach to replace Galtier ahead of next season.

Julian Nagelsmann and Sergio Conceicao are mentioned as potential targets along with Arteta.

PSG sporting adviser Luis Campos and Arteta ‘have spoken to each other in recent weeks’, but it is stated  ‘the chances that the discussions lead to a contract are almost nil’.

The first reason for this is that Arteta ‘feels good about the project’ at Arsenal after they qualified for the Champions League. It is also pointed out that Campos is ‘not the decision maker’ this time around after he ‘chose Galtier while others at the club insisted on Thiago Motta’.

Arteta’s current contract at Arsenal expires in 2025. Last year, Spanish outlet Sport claimed that the club’s owners are ‘pressing him to extend his contract in a long-term project’, while Edu is the manager’s ‘great supporter’.

The report added: ‘Arteta knows that he is also an alternative to the Manchester City bench where he started with Guardiola.

‘That is why he does not want to rush and he goes very calmly looking at the future. What is clear is that it depends on what happens on the Barcelona bench, the summer of 2025 will be very busy and Mikel Arteta would become the most coveted piece.’

Earlier this year, Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand claimed Arteta is “looking to go to Real Madrid”.

“You’ve got to keep Arteta, first and foremost,” Arteta said.

“I heard something… I heard that Real Madrid (are interested) and when they come knocking your players will be coachless.

“I heard Ancelotti, Don Carlo, the eyebrow, he might be getting off, and that Arteta is looking to go to Real Madrid.”
