Arsene Wenger has admitted he missed out on the chance to sign Kylian Mbappe for free when the wonderkid was at Monaco, amid speculation Liverpool are set to fork out £200million for the Paris Saint-Germain star.

Mbappe is one of the hottest properties in football at the moment.

The PSG megastar is expected to be on the move in the coming summer transfer window due to his contractual situation.

Mbappe will become a free agent in 2022 as things stand, and has reportedly told PSG to sell him in the summer rather than lose him for free.

PSG don’t want to let him go on the cheap, however, and will reportedly ask for a near-world-record fee in the region of £200m.

Liverpool are apparently nonplussed about that demand and are ready to fork out in order to sign the 20-year-old.

But it has now emerged they could have got him for free when he was younger if they had acted faster.

Speaking to beIN Sports this week, Wenger conceded that he tried to sign Mbappe before he signed a contract with Monaco.

Wenger claims he was at the youngster’s home before he signed a professional contract with Monaco – which would have been around the time of 2015, considering he made his debut for the first-team in December of that year.

Wenger also hinted that he wasn’t the only manager to be interested in the teenage attacker, and said plenty of other sides would have been keen.

“We can talk about Mbappe, I was at his home when he was undecided whether to extend his contract with Monaco,” the iconic manager said.

“He could have come to Arsenal for free.

“I would say every club is full of histories like that.

“You go to Milan, to Manchester, Arsenal, Chelsea there are these kind of stories everywhere.”

Reports claim Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group want to go all-out to sign Mbappe this summer.

The player was even apparently taken on a private jet by John Henry – head of FSG – back in 2017 when they were first linked.

The conversation left a good impression on Mbappe and his family, according to L’Equipe.
