Arsenal vs Sevilla: Gabriel Jesus scores twice in first half of Emirates debut

Gabriel Jesus #GabrielJesus

Arsenal fans were understandably ecstatic when the club officially announced the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City for £45 million.

Alexandre Lacazette really struggled to lead the line for the club in 2021/22, the Frenchman scoring just six goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.

That’s simply not good enough for a club like Arsenal, but Jesus looks like he will be the solution to their striker woes.

Prior to the Emirates Cup final match versus Sevilla, the Brazilian had scored four goals and contributed one assist in the team’s pre-season campaign.

By the time the clock ticked over to 15 minutes in north London on Saturday afternoon, Jesus’ goal tally for the Gunners was extended to six.

Arsenal blew Sevilla away in the first half on home soil and their new main man was right at the heart of it.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Jesus bagged his first goal in front of the Emirates crowd.

The striker converted from Granit Xhaka’s cross after he produced some excellent play in the build-up.

A little bit messy, but to borrow an overused cliche, they all count!

And just 60 seconds after his first, Jesus had his second Emirates goal when he expertly guided Gabriel Martinelli’s cross over the line with a delicious first-time finish on the volley.

Now that is a sight that every single Arsenal fan will absolutely adore.

A striker making dangerous runs behind defences and then not fluffing his lines when presented with an opportunity? Yeah, things weren’t like that in 2021/22 for the most part.

Arsenal then completed a bonkers opening 19 minutes at the Emirates against Sevilla by making it 4-0 through Saka.

Some relentless pressing from the hosts forced goalkeeper Bono into a mistake and the Hale End graduate capitalised to notch his second of the game.

Mikel Arteta’s side are looking seriously good as we head into the 2022/23 season, although we must say Sevilla certainly made things far too easy for them in the first half of proceedings.

Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign next Friday with a trip to Crystal Palace, before hosting Leicester City the following weekend.
