Joe Willock’s run of goalscoring form entered record-equaling territory after he struck for the seventh game in succession for Newcastle against Fulham on Sunday.

The England Under-21 international was sent out on loan by Arsenal in January in order to give him regular Premier League football and the midfielder has played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s successful survival bid.

Willock kept his incredible run going at Craven Cottage, picking up the ball deep inside his own half, driving nearly 60 yards up the pitch and powering a low shot beyond Marek Rodak after a fortuitous bounce fell his way to open the scoring in the 23rd minute.

In the process, Willock became only the second Newcastle player in the Premier League era to score in seven successive matches, matching Shearer’s accomplishment back in 1996.

Whether or not Willock gets an opportunity to extend that run will depend on whether or not Newcastle can tempt Arsenal into selling one of their brightest prospects in the summer.

Mikel Arteta insisted on Friday that the Hale End graduate would be back at the north London club for pre-season training, but Newastle boss Steve Bruce revealed he intends to test Arsenal’s resolve.

‘We always said that it was a double-edged sword, and we have to respect that he is Arsenal’s player,’ said Bruce.

‘We’ll see over the summer whether we can test their resolve, but as I said from day one, I’d like to thank Mikel and Steve Round on the football side of it because they were instrumental in getting me him and letting us borrow him for a few months.

‘He’s been great for us, he’s been great for Newcastle. When I see what he’s done in the last few weeks and the names who have scored six in six, it’s quite remarkable, so well done to Joe.

‘Let’s see. As I’ve said many, many times now, I’ve got total respect. Let’s not disrespect Arsenal, he is their player.
