Transfer update: Arsenal ‘plan’ player-plus-cash Maddison move

Aston Villa have already beaten Arsenal to the punch with one big-money move this transfer window after they broke their own transfer record to steal former Norwich man Emi Buendia from under the Gunners noses.

Buendia’s move to Villa Park means Arsenal are still on the prowl for a playmaker, yet Dean Smith’s side could prove to be a thorn in Arsenal side’s once again.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is thought to be keeping tabs on the situation of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, after the boyhood Gunners fan has seemingly fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge under boss Thomas Tuchel.

The forward was on the score-sheet at the Emirates just last weekend after his strike was enough to separate the sides and hand Chelsea a 2-1 win in a pre-season clash.

Though Abraham struggled for first-team minutes during the latter half of last season, his performances during Frank Lampard’s first and only full season in charge of the club, Abraham’s first in the top-flight, were nothing to be scoffed at.

Arsenal clearly think highly of the striker, thought to be valued between £30-£40m, but could see a deal scuppered by late interest from Aston Villa, according to The Telegraph.

Abraham has previous at Villa Park, having enjoyed a successful loan spell at the club over the course of the 2018-19 season, in which he bagged a stunning return of 25 goals.

His goal-scoring exploits were enough to help Villa secure promotion, meaning he has already cemented his status into the hearts of the Villa faithful, a potential factor when it comes to deciding where to move.

Abraham was restricted to just to 32 appearances last season, many of which were cameo’s from the bench and still managed 12 goals – to put that into context, that is the same amount of goals as £42m pound man Timo Werner bagged in his debut season in West London, signed this time last year.

Arsenal have been hit and miss in terms of pre-season form, with main goal threat and club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looking out of sorts in front of goal – only heightening the need for someone of Abraham’s quality.
