  • Gabriel Jesus has returned to Arsenal training in a major boost to Mikel Arteta, with the striker progressing ahead of schedule during his recovery from a knee injury.

The frontman underwent a minor procedure to correct a lingering issue after being forced out of action ahead of the Community Shield at the end of last month.

It is believed the setback was linked to the medial collateral ligament injury he sustained in last year’s World Cup, but he is now rapidly closing in on a comeback.

Indeed, Jesus was spotted in training by the Sky Sports cameras on Thursday morning, having taken part in the warm-ups ahead of the main session.

There is perhaps a small possibility that Jesus makes the bench for this weekend’s fixture against Fulham, though his condition will be carefully monitored.

Jesus’ comeback will be a boost to Mikel Arteta, whose side have won two from two this season

Boss Arteta admitted that the ace went under the knife to prevent repeat problems.

‘He is fine. Obviously he was very disappointed, he was feeling very good and this issue came up,’ Arteta revealed in a press conference.

‘Nobody expected it and we had to do a little procedure there. But unfortunately it was the best thing to do.

‘[To do it] as quickly as possible the better. We made that decision. I’m sure he will be back soon and very fit.’

Jesus’ knee woes led to him missing a large chunk of last season, with the 26-year-old sitting out of 12 Premier League matches before returning in March.

His absence handed Eddie Nketiah a chance to impress in the spotlight and the academy graduate has led the line for Arsenal in their opening two fixtures this year.

Brazil international Jesus scored 11 goals and laid on eight assists across 33 games in all competitions during his debut campaign at the Emirates.

He joined Arsenal from Manchester City last year in a £45million deal.
