PHOENIX — An Arizona man was sentenced to 18 months in prison and handed a $5,000 fine for his role in smuggling migrants into the United States, authorities said.
Donald Douglas Scarlett III, 54, of Tucson, pleaded guilty in May of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens for profit, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona said in a press release Monday.
Scarlett was arrested in March after authorities observed him making an illegal U-turn while driving erratically near the Arizona-Mexico border.
Authorities then conducted an immigration stop. During the check, agents found six undocumented immigrants from Mexico inside Scarlett’s vehicle.
He will also get 36 months of supervised release following prison time.
The U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case.
