Ann-Katrin Berger the hero as Chelsea knock out holders Lyon

For the thousands of fans streaming out of Stamford Bridge, this enthralling Champions League quarter-final had given them a new hero: Ann-Katrin Berger, the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Chelsea went two goals down and were on the verge of an exit to the eight-times European champions Lyon before Maren Mjelde scored a penalty with the last kick of extra time, after a lengthy VAR check for a foul on Lauren James.

The scores were tied at 2-2 on aggregate after Chelsea’s 1-0 first-leg win, leading to a penalty shoot-out. Then Berger came to the fore, first saving from Wendie Renard, then leaping to her right to push away Lindsey Horan’s penalty and book Chelsea a semi-final against Barcelona.

She was soon engulfed by Chelsea players and staff,
