Conservative pundit Ann Coulter has lashed out at the American tax system, calling it “unspeakably corrupt” and criticizing both Republicans and Democrats for being unwilling to change it.

Coulter took to Twitter on Monday night to give her take, in a series of posts, on The New York Times story claiming President Donald Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017.

“I don’t think the conservative take on @realDonaldTrump paying no taxes should be: BECAUSE HE’S SMART! I’ve paid nearly 50% of my income in taxes, year after year, and any system that allows billionaires to pay ZERO is unspeakable corrupt,” she said.

In the same tweet, she called on Democrats to change the tax system, but remained critical of the party throughout her comments.

She then said that Democrats “won’t touch the shockingly corrupt tax system” that allows real estate billionaires and hedge fund billionaires to pay “zilch in taxes because most of the billionaires donate to them,” also asking Republicans why they wouldn’t criticize that.

She then gave two examples of billionaires who have reportedly supported the Biden campaign—real estate broker George Marcus and the Pritzker family—and asked how much they had paid in taxes.

“Now that we have@realDonaldTrump as an example of how THE LAW allows real estate billionaires to get away with murder, how about fixing the utterly corrupt tax code?” she continued.

A Twitter user later agreed with Coulter’s first tweet, saying that it was “interesting” she suggested that “the tax code needs to be completely re-written and that Dems are the ones to do it”.

She replied saying that her question was “rhetoric” and that the Democrats wouldn’t change a system that, according to her, benefits their biggest donors.

Coulter’s tweets came the day after The New York Times published a report claiming that the president paid just $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017.

The piece also alleged that for 10 of the 15 years prior to 2016, the president did not pay any federal income tax, “largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.”

The Times has not released the documents that form the basis of its report to protects its sources, and the information has not been independently corroborated.

Coulter was the author of a 2016 book called In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!, and was once one of the president’s biggest supporters.

She has since become one of his biggest critics on the right, with the incomplete status of the border wall being one of her most frequent topics of complaint.

Early in 2020, when The Pentagon proposed a proposed 2021 budget of $15.4 billion for the Space Force, she took issue with the fact that the money was not being directed towards the wall along the border with Mexico.

She jokingly suggested the U.S. could colonize another planet as an alternative to the wall.
