Angels pull out victory over Mariners after fight

ANAHEIM — The Angels fought and won on Sunday afternoon.

Hours after engaging in a brawl that saw a half-dozen players from both teams ejected, the Angels pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

The Angels scored two runs in the seventh, on a homer by Luis Rengifo and then a two-out RBI single by David MacKinnon.

Reliever Olivera Ortega worked the final six outs to secure the victory. He was pressed into duty because Ryan Tepera and Raisel Iglesias, who would normally have worked the final innings for the Angels, were both ejected during the fight.

Angels left-hander José Suarez picked up the victory after allowing just one run in six innings.

Suarez was called up to make a spot start, but the Angels opted to use him behind an opener.

Right-hander Andrew Wantz, who started, sparked the fight when he hit Mariners left fielder Jesse Winker with a pitch in the second inning. Angels star Mike Trout was upset about a pitch toward his head at the end of Saturday night’s game.

Although the Angels no doubt took some satisfaction from standing up for Trout, the most important part of Sunday was that they won the game.

The Angels had lost four of the first five games of this homestand against the Kansas City Royals and Mariners. The Angels had not won a one-run game since May 8. They had lost their previous 10 one-run games.
