Ange Postecoglou gave an update on James Maddison and Micky van de Ven after both players were forced off with injury in our 4-1 loss against Chelsea on Monday night.
Maddison went down in the box clutching his ankle shortly before van de Ven pulled up seemingly in a lot of pain mid-run holding the back of his leg. Both were withdrawn two minutes into added time at the end of the first half.
Ange told the Review Show that van de Ven’s problem, ‘looked quite significant’ and speaking at his post-match press conference, added: “It’s too early, but looking at Micky, you’re thinking it’s a pretty significant one, so you’d assume he’ll be out for a little while. Madders got a knock on the ankle, and we’ll just have to assess him and see how it is.”
Having started so well on an eventful night in N17, taking the lead through Dejan Kulusevski, we also lost Cuti Romero (straight red) and Destiny Udogie (two yellow cards) to red cards, leaving us with 10 men from the 32nd minute and nine from 55. It took Chelsea another 20 minutes to forge ahead and we then created three good chances – Eric Dier had a goal disallowed for offside, Rodrigo Bentancur headed wide from close range and Heung-Min Son forced a late low save from Robert Sanchez – before Chelsea wrapped it up in added time.
