Scotland boss Steve Clarke has signed a new contract with the Tartan Army until 2026 – and that’s only good news for the nation according to star defender Andy Robertson.

Clarke led Scotland to their first international tournament for 22 years after beating Serbia on penalties in a play-off back in November 2020, sparking wild celebrations across the nation with fans eager to see their side take to a group stage for the first time this century.

The former Kilmarnock boss also took the Tartan Army to the brink of the World Cup in Qatar before playoff defeat to Ukraine ended the nation’s hopes of making the tournament. With that in mind, the SFA have offered Clarke a new contract which will see him through not only until the end of the Euro 2024 tournament, but the World Cup qualification process and a potential first time on the big stage if they can secure a place in 2026..

And Robertson, who has been one of the key performers under Clarke with his ability to lead teams with his elite competition nous, has praised the renewal of his contract with Euro qualification on the horizon. Speaking to Sky, Robertson said: “It’s good news for the whole country, I think since the manager’s come in, there’s been a lot more of a positive feeling around the Scotland national team.

“The fans have really took to him, the players have really took to him and the fact that we are guaranteed one extra campaign under him is good news for us all. The changing room was extremely happy when he told us.

“I think we’ve made a lot of changes behind the scenes, and I think we’ve made it a lot better to come away. Like you say, the lads are desperate to come away from Scotland, which rightly or wrongly wasn’t the case – sometimes we had a lot of call-offs to campaigns, which obviously doesn’t help the case to pick a team and a squad.

“Since he’s come in he’s been quite consistent in the squad that he’s picked and the lads have been very consistent and it obviously helps. I think that makes a massive difference in knowing that we’ve got him. We obviously knew we had him or this campaign and then we didn’t know what was going to happen but to get an extra campaign out of him and to make improvements on and off the pitch under his management is big for the players under him.”
