Andre Braugher, beloved star of Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, passed away yesterday at the age of 61, after a brief illness.

In the statement announcing his death, his family wrote, “in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Classical Theatre of Harlem, where Braugher served on the board.” In 2019, Braugher joined the board of the Classical Theatre of Harlem, an off-Broadway company founded in 1999.

“We are deeply heartbroken to share the passing of our dear friend and Trustee, Andre Braugher,” the Theatre wrote on social media. “A cherished figure in his family and community, Andre’s legacy extends beyond his acclaimed acting career to his generous philanthropic efforts. His presence among us was a source of joy and inspiration, and his absence leaves a profound void. Oceans of love for Ami Branson, Andre’s wife and his sons, Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest Mr. Braugher.”

On Instagram, the theater’s Associate Artistic Director, Carl Cofield, wrote, “I am beyond words. Andrè you were the light for so many of us. A Brutha that I wished that I could be like. A husband, father, and a capital A actor. From the stage to the screen and more importantly in life. I will miss our conversations about raising Black Boys, theater and manhood. I will miss you my Brother. Love, Peace and Soul.”

Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, sons Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley, brother Charles Jennings and his mother Sally Braugher.
