Andre Braugher, best known for playing Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died.
His publicist confirmed the actor died Monday. There’s no word yet on the cause of death, but it’s reported that he had a brief illness.
The 61-year-old got his first film role in Glory, where he acted alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington. Besides playing the serious, no-nonsense cop on Brooklyn 99, he also played Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street.
Andre won an Emmy for his role as Detective Frank. He starred in the gritty drama show from 1992 to 1998 and in his last year on the show he won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

While on set of Homicide: Life on the Street, Andre met his wife Ami Brabson who co-starred with him on the show. The two married in 1991 and shared three children – Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.
In an interview with Variety in 2020, Andre shared that he chose to spend time with his family and stay close to home over his career, but he didn’t regret it. “It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger,” he said, “I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life.”
Other movies and television shows on Andre’s resume include a recurring role on House, M.D., Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and voicing California Governor Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkwotiz on Netflix’s BoJack Horseman. He later won a second Emmy in 2006 for his role in Thief, a crime drama thriller that lasted six episodes.
