Tony Gilroy, the creator behind the hit Star Wars series Andor, has revealed that the upcoming second season will take audiences right up to where we meet the character in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In fact, while speaking with Empire Magazine, Gilroy revealed that the last few episodes of the Andor season two will cover “the last three days before Rogue One,” meaning that the Disney+ show will act as the perfect prequel to the 2016 Star Wars…prequel.

As well as taking us right up to the events of Rogue One, the second season of Andor will also be taking a few risks. Even more risks than the first outing, according to returning star Diego Luna. “The risks this season will take are very different,” the actor declares.

“In every way,” adds Gilroy. “Look, man, I’m not trying to make a career here; if anything I’m on the downhill side of a long career. But this is an opportunity. This is 1,500 pages of the most dynamic material in these people’s lives to deal with. We got it right the first time, and you don’t want to let your foot off the gas.”

While specific plot details for Andor season two remains under wraps, we do know that things will play out very differently from the first time around. Andor season two will detail the four years’ worth of events that lead up to the beginning of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with every few episodes depicting large chunks of time. Something that will surely be no easy task.

The last few episodes will then transport us to the final days and moments before we meet freedom fighter Cassian Andor in the movie and, while we know his fate, Gilroy and his team have already proven that this matters not when it comes to building tension and telling the captivating story of the thief-turned-Rebel spy.

The first season of Andor picks up five years before the events of 2016’s Rogue One and 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, and follows an ensemble cast of characters during the time that a Rebel Alliance is forming in opposition to the Galactic Empire. One such character is Cassian Andor, played once again by Rogue One star Diego Luna, a thief who becomes a revolutionary and eventually joins the Rebellion. The first season of Andor was met with critical acclaim upon release and currently holds a very fresh rating of 96% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The second season will build on the foundations of the first, with Gilroy teasing the themes and fates of the characters in Andor season two. “Some of its core ingredients are secrecy and paranoia and lack of trust and betrayal. So, how difficult is it to build a revolution?” asks Gilroy. “And what happens to the original gangsters, as other people get involved?”

Andor season two is expected to be released on Disney+ in August 2024. And May the 4th be with you all.
