When your own striker is describing the team as “slack” and a “shambles”, you know things haven’t been good enough.
Michail Antonio’s remarkably frank description of West Ham’s form came after four games without a win, including three straight defeats.
This match, and performance, was a marked improvement – a deserved win against rivals who were well below par.
Jarrod Bowen started as striker ahead of Antonio and was impressive even before his deflected volley for the third goal.
West Ham will now look to carry this level of performance into a Premier League campaign which has stuttered in recent weeks.
As for the EFL Cup, the Hammers now have trophy winning nous after the Europa Conference League last season, and should not be discounted.
