Amazon Prime Video Takes Untitled Pau Gasol Docuseries for Spain (EXCLUSIVE)

Gasol #Gasol

In April, Variety announced that a four-part documentary series following Spanish basketball great Pau Gasol had gone into production and was tracking his return to European basketball at 40 years old and following a serious foot injury which required surgery in 2019. Now, Spanish fans will be able to catch the yet-untitled special on Amazon Prime Video, after the streamer picked up the exclusive rights in a deal brokered by Prime Video Content Spain head Ricardo Cabornero and Fernando “Ferran” Prieto on behalf of the filmmakers.

Worldwide rights outside of Spain are still available and being handled by RTG Features out of the U.S.

Sports documentary veteran Oriol Bosch (“Andrés Iniesta: The Unexpected Hero”) directs the series’ four episodes, produced by PG Productions, RTG Features and Think450, the content and partnership engine of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

Pau Gasol is Spain’s most decorated and best-known basketball player of all time, and only rivaled in global popularity among sportsmen by tennis ace Rafa Nadal. In his nearly two decades spent in the NBA, he was a two-time NBA champion, six-time NBA All-Star, four-time All-NBA team selection and the 2002 Rookie of the Year. His NBA career wound up somewhat unceremoniously however, after a move to the Milwaukee Bucks ended in injury in March 2019.

At the time, he underwent surgery on a stress fracture in his foot and has spent the last two years working tirelessly to get back on the court and in top shape, aiming to play at this summer’s 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

This February, Gasol thrilled fans in Barcelona when he re-signed with the team where his career started more than 20 years ago, and where he won two Liga ACB championships. The new series will document the autumn of Gasol’s career, and his struggles to overcome the hurdles of time and aging for one final Olympic tournament. The series has been in production since 2019 and will release late this year.

RTG Features is also currently developing the scripted series “The Line” with Charles Barkley’s Round Mound Media; its docuseries “Promiseland,” following current NBA Rookie of the Year Ja Morant, will premiere on Crackle on June 3rd. The company previously produced “The House that Rob Built” and “Gap Year,” and are in post-production on a documentary about legendary NCAA basketball coach John Thompson.
