‘Am I dreaming’ – Liverpool fans in disbelief after Ashley Young red card for Everton

Liverpool were given a boost during the first half of today’s Merseyside derby after Ashley Young was sent off for Everton.

The former Manchester United man was first booked in the 18th minute for bringing down Luis Diaz and was later shown a second yellow in the 37th minute for another offence on the Colombian, tripping the Liverpool forward as he attempted to carry the ball into the box.

For Jurgen Klopp’s side, this represented a welcome change having so often been the team on the receiving end of red card decisions this season.

Alexis Mac Allister was the first to be dismissed, given his marching orders for a foul on Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie on his first Anfield start, though this was later rescinded after the Reds appealed this decision by referee Thomas Bramall.

Virgil van Dijk was the next to see red, which occurred the following weekend after the Dutchman was deemed to have denied Alexander Isak and Newcastle a clear goalscoring opportunity. Then came the controversy of the Tottenham Hotspur defeat at the end of last month, which saw Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota both head for an early bath.
