  • Alphonso Davies tried – and failed – to get Lionel Messi’s shirt in 2020

It’s been a long time coming, but Alphonso Davies has finally got his hands on one of Lionel Messi’s match-worn shirts.

Back in 2020, the Bayern Munich star was left frustrated after the German side’s famous 8-2 win over Barcelona in the Champions League.

Davies asked for the ultimate footballing souvenir at full-time, but was met with an “upset” Messi – which is understandable given the scoreline.

“I asked for it [Messi’s shirt] but I think he was a little bit upset,” the left-back told BT Sport at the time. “It’s OK, next time hopefully.”

Well, nearly three years later, Davies’ dream has finally come true.

Davies got Messi’s shirt after PSG 0-1 Bayern Munich After Bayern recorded a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening, thanks to Kingsley Coman’s second half goal, Davies tried his luck again.

And this time, Messi was more than willing to swap shirts with the Canada international.

For Davies, it’s a moment he will never, ever forget. He probably enjoyed it more than the victory itself in the Champions League last-16 first leg.

Now, if you want evidence of how much Davies idolises Messi, there’s actually a fantastic story from the man himself on the matter.

When asked if he watched the Champions League while growing up in an interview with UEFA, Davies revealed a brilliant phone call with his father about the Barcelona legend.

“I went to a football academy school, so every Wednesday or Tuesday, around 12:00 Edmonton time, we would watch it as a classroom,” he said. “All of the footballers were in there, cheering on whoever they wanted to win.

“It was amazing, and now being able to play in the Champions League, against one of my favourite players in the world [Lionel Messi], it’s incredible. Honestly, I’m lost for words – a dream come true.

“My mum called me yesterday and then my dad hopped on the phone, and he was like: ‘So you’re playing against your favourite player, I see.’ And I went: ‘Yeah.’ And then we both started laughing on the phone.

“And honestly we couldn’t even believe it, because he knows that I looked up to Messi when I was younger, and now playing against him, it’s really nice.”

That Messi PSG shirt is going up on Davies’ wall, of that you can be 99.99% certain.
