All eyes on Massachusetts sisters competing on US Olympic Women’s Soccer Team

Friends and family of a pair of Massachusetts sisters who are on Team USA’s women’s soccer team gathered in Whitman watch the team’s quarterfinals against the Netherlands at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Kristie and Samantha Mewis, who were born in Weymouth and grew up in Hanson and starred on the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School girls soccer team. They are both first-time Olympians.A crowd at The Patio at McGuiggan’s Pub is cheering on the team as they compete in the must-win game.Late in the second half of the game, it was tied 2-2. Samantha Mewis scored one of the goals.This is the first time that sisters have played on Team USA on a world championship roster at the senior level. However, both have previously played together in the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and the 2010 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.Kristie, the eldest sister by 592 days, went to Boston College and now plays with the Houston Dash. Sam attended UCLA and plays for the North Carolina Courage. Sam was a part of the USWNT World Cup win at France 2019.Kristie returned to the national team in late 2020 after a seven-year hiatus that included an ACL tear in 2018.
