Brock Purdy grew up in a competitive household — just ask his older sister, Whittney, and younger brother, Chubba.

The Purdy children were born and raised in Gilbert, Arizona, where they were spoiled with advanced training facilities and relatively comfortable temperatures year-round. It was the perfect formula to bring up a couple of all-star athletes, and their parents, Shawn and Carrie Purdy, knew it.

Whittney is the oldest of the three siblings and went on to play collegiate softball, while Chubba, the youngest, recently signed to play football at San Jose State University. Meanwhile, Brock belongs to an elite team of his own — at least for the time being, until Chubba can join him in the big leagues.

Despite being the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft, Brock has carved out a name for himself as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. In December 2022, Brock led his team to victory against legend Tom Brady during his first NFL start, with his siblings and family present.

Thanks to the NFL, Brock and his siblings have been able to make even more memories in the last year. However, one of Brock’s favorites would have to be the time he pranked his family on draft day. After six rounds of not hearing his name called, Brock’s chances of getting drafted were slim. Then the 49ers general manager called.

“I come walking out to the living room and everyone is waiting,” Brock recalled to NBC Sports. “It’s another free agency call,” he told his family, tricking them into believing that he didn’t get picked. “They’re like ‘no way, you’re lying,’ and I said, ‘that’s it.’ ”

“I’m trying to act all sad in the chair,” Brock laughed. Before the announcer read his name aloud, it appeared in big letters on the TV — leading to quite the reaction from the Purdys. “They all screamed and jumped up like I was a first-round pick,” Brock recalled.

Here’s everything to know about Brock Purdy’s siblings, Whittney Purdy and Chubba Purdy, and their special bond with their famous brother.

Settling down in Arizona was a no-brainer for Shawn and Carrie, who grew up on opposite sides of the country. “He wasn’t going to California, and I wasn’t going to Florida. This was our compromise. And we love it,” Carrie explained of their decision in a 2019 piece for The Athletic.

The pair raised their children in the middle class town of Gilbert, which is located about 25 miles southeast of Phoenix. The area was already somewhat familiar to Shawn, who frequented Arizona while playing minor league baseball. As time went on and the Purdy kids got involved with sports, it quickly became obvious that Gilbert had been the right choice.

“The sports in Arizona were pretty good,” Purdy said in an interview with the 49ers, leading up to a game at State Farm Stadium. “Just in terms of the competitive nature. I feel like I was a really good athlete because of the kids that I was around who loved playing sports.”

Similar to Brock, Whittney and Chubba were also able to take advantage of year-round training thanks to Phoenix’s relatively placid climate.

Brock and Chubba have always had a competitive relationship

“Ever since we were little, competition has been everything,” Chubba told AZCentral in 2019. “We just always want to win and we don’t like losing.”

Chubba recalled one family vacation in which he and his big brother came up with tricky challenges to see who could outthrow the other and to see whose skills were sharper and more precise. Whatever it was, Shawn said you could always count on “the gloves [coming] off when those two are together.”

Preston Purdy, who affectionately goes by “Chubba” around friends and family, earned his unique nickname when he was just a year old. In an interview with AZCentral, Shawn recalled Preston being a “huge” baby, weighing 32 pounds ahead of his first birthday. And so, he began calling his youngest Chubba, as did the rest of their family.

The nickname stuck and has become Chubba’s professional name on the gridiron as well. The rising athlete said that he plans to legally change his first name to “Chubba” in the near future.

“Everyone calls me Chubba,” he told the outlet. “People have said stuff like, ‘Chubby,’ but I don’t care, because Chubba is my name.”

The next generation of Purdy athletes first started with Whittney. The oldest of her siblings, Whittney played softball at Spartanburg Methodist in South Carolina for two years, before transferring to Southeastern University, where she finished out her college career, alternating between third base and shortstop.

Simultaneously, Brock was trying to get ahead in football. But as he told The Athletic, his arm was no match to his older sister’s, who “could launch it.” Nevertheless, Brock said Whittney was too kind and mature to ever hold it over him.

In a Jan. 14 announcement posted on X, Chubba shared that he’s committed to play football next year at San Jose State University. Chubba entered the NCAA transfer portal following a successful run at the University of Nebraska, where he made 12 game appearances. Prior to that, Chubba played at Florida State University from 2020 to 2021.

Chubba’s college transfer means he’ll just be down the road from Brock starting next season.

In July 2023, Whittney announced on Instagram that she would finally be gaining a sister. Whittney, Chubba and the rest of their family were present when Brock got down on one knee and asked his then-girlfriend, Jenna Brandt, to marry him. Whittney celebrated the milestone on social media, sharing a carousel of images from the special day and welcoming Jenna into their family.

“Such a great week celebrating Brock and Jenna🤍,” she wrote.  “So excited to be gaining the most sweetest sister in law! Love you both & Cheers to an amazing year ahead🥂💍”

Along with a few others, Whittney and Jenna took a trip to Telluride, Colorado, for Jenna’s bachelorette party. “Had the best time celebrating my soon to be sister in law!!! Love you lots JB & cant wait to have you be part of the family soon!” she wrote alongside a gallery of photos.

The soon-to-be sisters can also be seen cheering on Brock at Levi’s Stadium, and often with Whittney’s boyfriend, too.

During an interview with the Omaha World-Herald, Chubba took a moment to sing his big brother’s praises. The younger Purdy acknowledged that Brock not only gave him his affinity for colder weather, but has helped teach him the ins and outs of football.

“My brother has helped me a ton in life and football,” Chubba told reporters. Amongst the many helpful skills Chubba’s learned from Brock, “reading defenses” and “teaching me the game” are at the top, he said.

“I really appreciate that from him. He’s had a ton of experience as well, he’s just taught me so much,” Chubba added.
