Ali Wong’s Dark Denim Eyeshadow Popped on the Emmys Red Carpet

Her makeup artist gives us all the details.

Every awards season, we are treated to the best fashion in show business. This year is already no different. Whether it’s everyone showing up to the Golden Globes with a fresh flippy bob, Jenna Ortega ditching her Wednesday goth glam for a fairy princess fantasy, or even Princess Poppy of RuPaul’s Drag Race showing up to the 2024 Emmys dressed as a literal green goblin, there is always something to look forward to.

One thing we couldn’t wait to see? Ali Wong’s red carpet ensemble to celebrate her nomination (and win!) for her role in one of the biggest TV shows of the year, Beef. Which, oh, did she deliver on.

For the big night, Wong enlisted the expertise of Daniel Martin to create a makeup look inspired by her show-stopping, eye-catching Louis Vuitton gown and its various textures, colors, and patterns. The top half of her gown was a sequin silver moment covered in accents of black mesh. Then, at the waist, it flowed to the floor in an electric blue silk with prints of yellow, pink, and red flowers.

To keep the glam tied to the abstract gown, Martin says that he drew inspiration from the blue of her skirt. “I wanted to create a twist on a linear smoky eye but in gradations of blue,” he tells Byrdie. But that’s not all, as the shade had to shine through the frames of her glasses but not “create too much drama with her makeup.” He found the perfect balance using Dior’s Diorshow 5 Couleurs Palette ($65) in Denim.

To “ensure her eyes pop behind her glasses on the carpet,” Martin started with a crayon as the base layer. “Laying down the Dior Onstage Crayon ($32) in Blue all over the eyelid, including upper and bottom waterlines, creates an intense shadow base that allows the eyeshadow going on top of it to really pop,” he says.

Beyond the eyeshadow, Wong’s glam was brought to life with what Martin calls the “key product,” Dior’s Rouge Dior Lipstick ($49) in the shade Nude Style. The satiny pinkish nude shade coated her lips, matching the light pink florals on her skirt, tying the eyeshadow into the ensemble even further.

A classic French manicure by Thuy Nguyen using all Après products and a wavy side-parted hairstyle by Clayton Hawkins finished off her glam.
