Alexis Mac Allister was left red faced as his error gifted a goal to his old side Brighton.

The Liverpool midfielder was facing the Seagulls for the first time since his £35million move away, and handed them the lead with a dreadful mistake.

Looking to receive a simple pass in the 20th minute, Mac Allister was instantly jumped on by Simon Adingra, who intercepted the ball before unleashing a shot past Alisson Becker into the back of the net.

Speaking on talkSPORT, in-ground correspondent Sam Ellard said: “That’s so, so bad, Mac Allister was caught sleeping. They’ve shot themselves in the foot.

“It’s so lackadaisical from Mac Allister, he doesn’t know what’s going on around him.”

The no.10 was again playing out of position in a defensive midfield role, and it’s not the first time he’s been caught out.

Jurgen Klopp has overseen a midfield overhaul during the summer, losing more defensive stars Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League.

Coming in the other way, Wataru Endo is the only specialist defensive midfielder, but was again left on the bench in favour of Mac Allister.

The Reds did eventually recover in the first half, first with Mohamed Salah sweeping home, before he added another from the penalty spot for a 2-1 lead.

The Seagulls then came back in the second half with Lewis Dunk netting an equaliser in the 78th minute.
