Former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has questioned whether Marcus Rashford ‘deserved’ the new deal he was given at Manchester United.

The England striker put pen to paper on a new five-year deal in the summer to end speculation over his future at the club.

Rashford hit 30 goals in all competitions last season, and carried United to third place in the Premier League.

However, he’s managed just one goal so far this season and there are calls for the winger to be dropped.

Rashford was taken off in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, despite United being in dire need of a goal.

And Pardew has questioned whether Rashford earned the deal that saw him made United’s top earner.

‘Rashford, there’s a lot of moaning about him at the moment, they gave him a bumper new contract and he’s now probably in the top 10 best players in the country – did he really deserve that contract?’ Pardew said on TalkSPORT.

‘Had he done enough in that small period when he was very successful at the back end of last year? I don’t know.

‘You can only ask these questions when you know the political process of how transfers work at Man United – the owners and everybody involved, it’s a very complicated business but what is definitely happening is that on that pitch there doesn’t look like there’s a system that they’re going to stick to or a seven or eight who are going to play every week.

‘Who are the seven or eight? That’s the difference I see with Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool at the moment. It’s a worry if you’re a Man United fan, for sure.’
