An Alabama man faces charges after he was found to be in possession of stimulus checks that weren’t his.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department said it received reports on Jan. 9 of a suspicious man walking on County Road 434 in the East Lawrence community. The man was later identified as Brandon Cottingham, 42.
Cottingham was later arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance; theft of property in the second degree; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of a forged instrument in the second degree; and illegal possession of a credit/debit card.
Deputies said Cottingham was in possession of 3 stimulus checks and/or credit/debit cards belonging to other people.
The IRS began mailing paper stimulus checks and debit cards on Dec. 30. You can find the status of your payment here.
