Alabama couple leads police on chase after allegedly stealing gas tank from garage sale

An Alabama couple led police on a chase through Jackson Monday morning after, police say, they stole items from a garage sale in a Madison neighborhood, according to the Madison Police Department.
Officials said the incident occurred around 9:12 a.m. when Madison police responded to calls and reports of a couple who were believed to have stolen multiple items, including gas cans, from a garage sale in the Windsor Hills neighborhood.
Steven Garner, 44. and Dana Morales, 51, were traveling in a vehicle reported stolen from Walker County, Alabama, officials said.
Capt. Kevin Newman, administrative and support services commander of the Madison Police Department, said officers encountered the 2003 Toyota Tundra truck on Mississippi 463 near Interstate 55, and upon attempting to stop the vehicle, it fled southbound on Interstate 55 with officers in pursuit.
“The vehicle pursuit continued southbound on Interstate 55, at which time the vehicle exited west onto Beasley Road and then southbound on State Street,” Newman said. “The vehicle continued south on State Street, at which time the Capitol Police Department assisted with the pursuit. The fleeing vehicle continued south on State Street, turning west onto Highway 80 and north onto Interstate 220. The vehicle exited Interstate 220 east on West Capitol Street. The vehicle continued on Capitol Street turning north on Congress Street. Upon turning on Congress Street, the vehicle stopped when the driver and occupant surrendered to officers.”

Newman said both suspects were charged in the incident.
Steven Garner of Jasper, Alabama, was faces charges of receiving stolen property (felony), felony fleeing and petit larceny. Garner is also wanted for receiving stolen property and attempting to elude in Cullman County, Alabama.
Dana Morales of Cullman County, Alabama, was charged with receiving stolen property (felony) and conspiracy to commit a crime. Morales is also wanted for receiving stolen property in Cullman County, Alabama.

Both subjects are at the Madison County Detention Center, with no bond set, officials said late Monday afternoon.
While responding to assist with the pursuit, a Capitol Police Department vehicle was involved in an accident with a third-party car on State Street near East Rankin Street.
Officials said no injuries were reported as a result of the accident.
