Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder says he is still confident that Antony will not be sold to Manchester United.

United are pushing hard to sign the Brazil international before the end of the transfer window, while the winger is also keen for a reunion with Erik ten Hag.

Ajax have rejected multiple offers from United for Antony but their latest bid submitted this week, which is in excess of €90 million (£76m), is the closest they’ve come to matching the Dutch club’s €100m (£84.5m) valuation.

But speaking after the Champions League draw on Thursday which saw Ajax placed in Group A alongside Porto, Liverpool and Rangers, Schreuder gave no indication that Antony will be heading to United any time soon.

‘I continue to assume that Antony will continue to play at Ajax,’ Schreuder said.

‘I understand what he wants but he has a contract with Ajax and I think we are a nice club, too.

‘The finances are not up to me. We have sold a lot of players and a lot of players have come to Ajax with a certain ambition. I think you take that, too. That is my feeling and I dare to express it.

When it was suggested that players usually end up moving clubs if they push to leave, Schreuder replied: ‘We know a little bit about how football works, don’t we?

‘The boy really wants to go, but then it doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen.

‘We’re going to do everything we can to stop that.’
