Agriculture biosecurity investment about protecting ‘brand Australia’: Littleproud

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud says the government’s additional investment in $371 million in agricultural biosecurity shows how serious the government is about protecting “brand Australia”. “This takes our investment in Australia’s biosecurity, since October last year, to $1.25 billion,” he said. “That is how serious the Australian Government is about protecting brand Australia, protecting those beef producers that are here today, making sure that we are using the cutting edge technology we need to, to make sure we are keeping those pests and diseases out”. Mr Littleproud said the investment will go towards evolving the nation’s biosecurity measures to ensure they are “fit for purpose and fit for the future”. “Part of the money is about making sure we can run a national exercise whereby we can simulate an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease or AFS across the country and make sure our state counterparts are able to work with us to ensure that we can lock it down as quickly as we can,” he said. Mr Littleproud also said 3D X-ray technology would be harnessed to scan packages to identify organic matter and even live animals.
