Agbonlahor names Tottenham as winner in race to sign James Maddison – ‘it’s perfect’
Maddison #Maddison
Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Tottenham would be the “perfect” destination for James Maddison as he prepares to leave Leicester this summer.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old could “transform” the Lilywhites into a more attacking side.
Sources told this site on Thursday (23 February) that Tottenham are in pole position to beat Man City and Newcastle to the signing of Maddison this summer.
Leicester have stepped up their efforts to keep the England international but he is in no rush to extend his contract – which expires in less than 18 months.
Maddison has notched nine goals and five assists in just 17 Premier League appearances as a key man for the Foxes this season.
The Tottenham squad is currently devoid of attacking midfielders – with manager Antonio Conte preferring to play with a flat, three-man midfield.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think Spurs would be the perfect club for him.
“Tottenham need a number ten like him. They keep playing this 3-4-3 formation, but they can totally change that if they get Maddison.
“It transforms into a 4-3-3 – and that means more attacking football for the fans.
“Bentancur, Hojbjerg, and Maddison as a midfield three is a really exciting prospect for Tottenham.
“Whoever does get Maddison this summer has got themselves a really top player.”
Tottenham and Newcastle look set to battle it out for the fourth Champions League qualification spot for the remainder of this season.
The Magpies are a point behind Conte’s side but have played a game fewer than the Lilywhites.
