AFL Grand Final 2022: Geelong Cats waterboy Sam Moorfoot praises captain Joel Selwood

Geelong’s popular water boy Sam Moorfoot has described Joel Selwood plucking him out of the crowd on AFL grand final day as the “moment” of his life.

Selwood’s gesture to Moorfoot after the Cats’ stunning 81-point premiership over the Sydney Swans has gone viral.

The Cats captain spotted Moorfoot, who is a lifelong Geelong supporter and has been working at the club for more than seven years, in the stands and invited him onto the MCG to take part in the lap of honour.

Moorfoot was still riding high at Geelong’s family day at Kardinia Park on Sunday, walking on stage with star Cats forward Tom Hawkins as the premiership heroes were presented to the adoring club faithful.

“What a moment,” Moorfoot told AAP on Sunday.

“I’m very proud of my boys to win a premiership.

“Joel said he wanted to get me on the ground.

“That was the moment of the life, what an honour.”

Selwood first met Moorfoot, who has Down syndrome, back in 2015 when he started working as the club’s head water boy.

The four-time premiership skipper was appointed as the AFL’s inaugural Disability Inclusion ambassador last year.

At last week’s Brownlow Medal count, Selwood was announced as this year’s Jim Stynes community leadership award winner.

The 34-year-old legend could not have been more impressive during grand final week, leading by example on and off the field.

Before the match, Selwood carried a beaming Levi Ablett, the son of AFL and Geelong legend Gary Ablett Jr, out onto the ground.

Selwood had announced on Friday he would run out with Levi, who has a rare degenerative disease, as a way of thanking Ablett and his family for their service to the Cats
