Pace and spirit save day for Dons

A week ago, Kevin Sheedy would not be drawn into comparisons of the spirit of his young side with that of the great Essendon sides he coached to two premierships in the mid-1980s.

“At the present time,” he said after the baby Bombers of 1993 had bounced back from the qualifying loss against Carlton to defeat West Coast soundly in the first semi-final, “it’s the youngest side I’ve coached that has shown this spirit.”
Fair enough. Sheedy’s 1984 premiership side had come back from a 23- point three-quarter-time deficit to defeat Hawthorn. This side had done nothing comparable.
