China’s Adora Magic City, the nation’s first domestically built large cruise ship, has successfully completed its inaugural sea trial and returned to its home port in Shanghai. This momentous achievement was reported by the China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), the world’s largest shipbuilder. The sea trial, which commenced on July 17, saw the enormous vessel depart from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a CSSC subsidiary responsible for its construction. After eight days of rigorous testing, engineers conducted over 60 function tests to comprehensively assess the ship’s power, propulsion, and control systems. The CSSC also ensured that the vessel’s amenities were convenient and comfortable for passengers.
Following the successful sea trial, the ship will undergo further refinement of its equipment and interior decor. The second sea trial is scheduled to take place before October. If all proceeds as planned, the “floating luxury hotel” will be delivered to its buyer by the end of this year. Chen Gang, the general manager of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and chief designer of the cruise ship, expressed optimism about meeting this deadline.
Impressively, the Adora Magic City measures a staggering 323.6 meters in length, 37.2 meters in width, and 72 meters in height – equivalent to a 25-story residential building. The vessel is powered by five diesel generators and driven by two electric thrusters, enabling a cruising speed of 33 kilometers per hour and a maximum speed of approximately 42 km/h.Passengers aboard the Adora Magic City will have access to 16 stories of living, shopping, and entertainment space, housing various amenities such as restaurants, pubs, coffee bars, arts centers, and amusement parks. Musical performances, art shows, and a diverse range of culinary options will enhance the onboard experience. The ship boasts 2,125 passenger rooms capable of accommodating 5,246 tourists, along with nearly 700 rooms for the crew. Additionally, a 5G network will cover the mammoth vessel, ensuring seamless connectivity for passengers.
The construction of the Adora Magic City marks a significant milestone in China’s shipbuilding industry. In November 2018, CSSC forged a collaboration with Carnival Corp and Fincantieri to design and construct two 135,500-metric-ton Vista-class cruise ships. The Adora Magic City’s construction began in October 2019, while its sister ship’s construction commenced in August 2022.
This groundbreaking project showcases China’s growing prowess in the maritime sector and positions the nation as a formidable player in the global cruise industry. With its impressive features and luxurious offerings, the Adora Magic City promises an unparalleled cruising experience for passengers when it embarks on its maiden voyage.
