A running list of postponed sporting events as England mourns Queen Elizabeth II
England #England
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in the United Kingdom’s history, passed away Thursday at age 96. After more than 70 years on the throne, she was an integral part of the nation’s history, even as her royal family’s political influence waned.
It’s an event for which the UK has braced, even if there was no way to predict exactly when it would take place. Now the country heads into a period of mourning as it readies Elizabeth’s son Charles, Prince of Wales, ascension to the throne. This will mean an in-state funeral not seen since Winston Churchill’s passing, a cessation of governmental proceedings and breathless media coverage across England, Scotland, Wale and Northern Ireland.
It also means sporting events across Great Britain will be suspended as a nation reacts. Here are the events that have been postponed thus far. This list will be updated as news trickles in.
The European Tour event, hosted approximately one hour south of London in Surrey, England, suspended play soon after the news broke. It’s unclear when or if it will be restarted.
