Alabama never fails to deliver on front yard decorations for Christmas and Halloween seasons, but Valentine’s Day? It isn’t often you see full-on displays outside one’s home the way you would icicle lights or massive tarantulas. But one house in Northport caught our eye with a new spin on “a dozen red roses.

Sure enough, Jon Childers of Northport planted 12 cardboard cutouts of a grinning Rose Nylund, known to you as Betty White’s character on the beloved 1980s sitcom “The Golden Girls,” here wearing a bright red pantsuit.

There’s also a sign out front that reads “A Dozen Red Roses. Just for you!”

Childers, a director at a Tuscaloosa-based technology firm, said he and his wife Catie are fans of the show, but they like to think outside the box for holiday decorations, especially with their house positioned at the front of their neighborhood off of Highway 43.

“We try to push past the norm when holidays roll around and decorate with as much creativity and cheer as possible, especially considering we are the first house on the block,” he said. “Apologies to the neighborhood if we sometimes tiptoe past HOA guidelines with our decorations.”

Childers said he was tipped off to the existence of the kit by my his sister-in-law, Meg Meadows, and knew immediately that they had to have it for Valentine’s Day.

“She was a fan when we met 21 years ago and the habit of watching together stuck, which I cherish, as it’s something she loves that I get to share with her,” he said. “I knew the decoration would give her a smile so there was no question I had to put this out for her.

“We are genuinely excited and thrilled that others have shared in our cheer for this holiday, and others. If anyone finds joy and a smile from decorations we display, that’s all we could ask for.”
