A day in Downer: What’s attracting people to this triangular suburb?

Downer #Downer

Downer is a triangular suburb hugging the northern boundary of Dickson in Canberra’s Inner North.

It was originally an agricultural experiment station for the CSIRO and construction on the suburb started in the 1960s.

These days it’s known for low-density housing – with homes sitting on larger blocks – leafy streets and spacious playing fields, while the transport hub of Dickson, including the light rail, is a stone’s throw away.

Eat & drink

Head to the Downer shops where you’ll find Gang Gang Cafe and Bar, a cosy spot for top-notch coffee, hearty fare or a fresh cake or pastry.

While you’re at the Downer shops, pick up a bottle of local wine at Peter’s Wine Shop.

Otherwise, the smorgasbord of Dickson’s Woolley Street is right on your doorstep. Start at one end with brunch at Highroad, or choose from one of the many Asian favourites that line the street.
