WEST CALDWELL, NJ — A quartet of police officers in West Caldwell received letters of commendation after they took “fast action” to help a resident in trouble last week, authorities said.

According to the West Caldwell Police Department:

“On March 6, Sgt. Michael Orr, Cpl. Raymond Foster, Ptl. Steven Huster and Ptl. Anthony Berardino responded to assist a West Caldwell resident who had partially amputated his hand at the wrist while using a table saw. These officers took life-saving measures by applying a tourniquet to stem the arterial bleeding.”

Police continued:

“The West Caldwell Police Department issues its officers tourniquets and blood clotting agents for use in combat situations or extraordinary medical emergencies such as this. The Essex County Sheriff’s Office supplied our agency with these vital tools, which certainly made a difference on that day.”

Orr, Foster, Huster and Berardino were awarded letters of commendation for their “fast action in assisting a patient in a serious and life-threatening condition,” authorities said.
