Grey’s Anatomy returned on March 11th in a dramatic crossover episode with Station 19 that has left fans asking “did Andrew DeLuca die?”

Grey’s Anatomy fans have been waiting for what seemed like a lifetime for the show to return after its mid-season break.

At long last, season 17 resumed on ABC on March 11th in a special crossover episode with Grey’s Anatomy’s sister show, Station 19.

However, the events of the crossover have left fans fearing for Andrew DeLuca with many asking “did Andrew DeLuca die?” after the character’s fate was left hanging in the balance for much of the episode.

Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy recap

In Station 19, we follow Andrew and Carina DeLuca as they work to bring down a sex trafficking ring that emerged in the series before the mid-season break.

Shockingly, Andrew DeLuca was stabbed by one of the villainous sex traffickers and the Station 19 episode ended with the character being rushed to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

In the episode of Grey’s Anatomy that followed, Andrew’s colleagues worked tirelessly in the hopes of saving him.

ABC Did Andrew DeLuca die?

The stab wound he had suffered in the Station 19 episode had damaged several of his vital internal organs beyond repair.

Despite the best efforts of his colleagues, Andrew DeLuca succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 22:50.

During the episode, it was heavily hinted that DeLuca was passing over as we saw him exploring Meredith’s magical beach where he was able to reunite with his mother and walk off into the sunset.

ABC Giacomo Gianniotti discusses DeLuca’s departure

Giacomo Gianniotti, who has played Andrew DeLuca since the character was first introduced in season 11, spoke to Deadline about DeLuca’s fate.

The 31-year-old actor revealed that it was the writers’ decision to kill off his character and that his death would come after the first few episodes of season 17.

Speaking about DeLuca’s exit plotline, Giacomo said: “Saving all these children who potentially could’ve been trafficked… was a beautiful storyline” and “a beautiful way for the character to exit as a hero.”

The Italian-Canadian actor also shared his initial reaction to the decision to kill off DeLuca: “I said ‘absolutely.’ I’ve been on the show for six years, seven seasons. It’s definitely been a long time, and I’m a young guy. So, I think this was a good time to depart.”
